Phase 3: Real-World Application and Experience – The Bridge to Opportunity
Phase 3 of the Women with STEAM program is where theory meets practice. This phase is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to apply their newly acquired STEM skills in real-world settings, fostering confidence, competence, and connection to the professional world. By integrating project-based learning, internships, and community engagement, this phase equips participants with practical experience, enhances their resumes, and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of STEM careers.
The central philosophy of Phase 3 is the idea that hands-on experience is the most effective way to reinforce skills, build professional networks, and develop problem-solving abilities. By focusing on experiential learning and partnerships with local organizations, this phase ensures that participants leave the program not just with knowledge but with the ability to demonstrate and apply that knowledge in meaningful ways.

Goal: Offer specialized training and certifications in high-demand STEM areas to prepare women for competitive job markets and career advancement.
The Core Components of Phase 3
Project-Based Learning
Project-based learning is the cornerstone of Phase 3, offering participants a safe yet challenging environment to apply their STEM training. Participants collaborate on real-world problems, designing and executing projects that align with their interests and career goals.
For instance, participants interested in coding might develop an app for a local nonprofit, while those with an interest in robotics could design a prototype to solve an accessibility challenge in their community. The projects are intentionally structured to be both ambitious and achievable, encouraging creativity while teaching essential project management skills like time management, teamwork, and troubleshooting.
By the end of this component, participants have tangible proof of their skills—a completed project that they can showcase in their portfolios or present to potential employers.

Internships and Industry Placements
Phase 3 also connects participants with internships or short-term industry placements in local businesses, nonprofits, or government agencies. These internships are carefully curated to match participants with organizations in their field of interest, ensuring a meaningful and mutually beneficial experience.
For example, a participant interested in hydroponic agriculture might intern with a local urban farming initiative, while someone pursuing a career in digital prototyping might work with a startup developing sustainable consumer products. These placements not only provide hands-on experience but also allow participants to build industry-specific skills and gain insights into workplace culture and expectations.
During their internships, participants are supported by mentors who guide them through challenges, offer constructive feedback, and encourage their professional growth. The internships often culminate in participants presenting their contributions to the organization, further developing their public speaking and presentation skills.
Community Engagement and STEM Advocacy
Beyond individual projects and internships, Phase 3 emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community and inspiring others to pursue STEM. Participants are encouraged to take part in community-based STEM initiatives, such as organizing workshops for children, volunteering in local makerspaces, or contributing to community-focused engineering challenges.
By engaging with their communities, participants reinforce their own learning while becoming ambassadors for STEM education. These activities not only enhance their leadership and communication skills but also demonstrate their commitment to making STEM accessible and inclusive—a core value of the Women with STEAM program.
Skills Developed During Phase 3
Through its combination of hands-on projects, professional placements, and community involvement, Phase 3 focuses on developing a comprehensive skill set that prepares participants for STEM careers.
Technical Proficiency
Participants deepen their technical expertise by applying their skills in real-world scenarios. Whether coding a program, designing a prototype, or conducting scientific research, they gain practical experience that enhances their understanding and confidence.
Problem-Solving and Innovation
Hands-on projects and internships require participants to think critically and creatively to overcome challenges. They learn to approach problems methodically, experimenting with different solutions and adapting their strategies based on outcomes.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Many of the activities in Phase 3 involve working in teams, reflecting the collaborative nature of most STEM careers. Participants develop interpersonal skills, learn to navigate group dynamics, and practice effective communication, all of which are essential for workplace success.
Professional Communication
Through presenting projects, writing reports, and engaging with industry professionals, participants refine their communication skills. They learn how to articulate their ideas clearly, tailor their messaging to different audiences, and build confidence in their professional interactions.
Networking and Relationship Building
By connecting with mentors, colleagues, and community members, participants build networks that can support their career growth. These relationships often lead to job recommendations, collaborative opportunities, or continued mentorship after the program ends.

Support Systems During Phase 3
Recognizing the challenges that single mothers may face while participating in internships or community activities, the Women with STEAM program provides robust support systems to ensure their success.
Mentorship and Coaching
Each participant is paired with a mentor who provides guidance, encouragement, and advice throughout Phase 3. Mentors help participants navigate workplace challenges, identify opportunities for growth, and build confidence in their abilities.
Flexible Scheduling
Internships and projects are designed to accommodate participants’ schedules, with options for part-time or remote work where possible. This flexibility allows single mothers to balance their professional development with their parenting responsibilities.
Childcare and Transportation Assistance
To eliminate logistical barriers, the program offers childcare and transportation support. These resources ensure that participants can focus on their learning and work without worrying about access or affordability.
Ongoing Skill Development
Throughout Phase 3, participants have access to additional workshops and resources to enhance their learning. These might include training on workplace etiquette, advanced technical skills, or strategies for managing work-life balance.
Outcomes of Phase 3
By the end of Phase 3, participants are well-prepared to enter the workforce or advance to Phase 4 of the program. The real-world experience gained during this phase provides them with a competitive edge in the job market, as well as the confidence to tackle new challenges.
Key outcomes include:
- A Completed Portfolio: Participants leave with a portfolio of projects that showcase their skills and accomplishments, making them more attractive to potential employers.
- Professional References: Internships and community engagement activities often lead to strong professional references that support participants’ job applications.
- Enhanced Confidence: Having successfully applied their skills in real-world settings, participants feel more confident in their abilities and career prospects.
- Expanded Networks: Participants build relationships with mentors, colleagues, and community members, creating a network of support for their ongoing career journey.
