Phase 2: Overview
Phase 2 of the Women with STEAM program is designed to deepen participants’ knowledge and skills in STEM areas while providing hands-on experiences that are directly aligned with the technical demands of today’s workforce. This phase builds upon the foundational learning of Phase 1, offering targeted skill development in technology, science, engineering, and mathematics. It also includes comprehensive career preparation to ensure participants are ready to transition into meaningful employment or further specialized training programs.
By integrating both technical and soft skills training, Phase 2 empowers single mothers and women to enhance their competencies in various STEM fields while simultaneously building a portfolio of work that demonstrates their abilities. The focus is on developing marketable skills that align with industry standards, while also continuing to address the unique challenges single mothers face in entering and succeeding in STEM careers.
Coursework and Workshops
Phase 2 features a robust curriculum that includes a combination of technical courses, workshops, and career readiness sessions. Each component of the curriculum is designed to build confidence, competence, and a competitive edge, preparing participants for STEM careers or further technical training.
Technical Courses:
Introduction to Coding and Software Development
This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of coding using user-friendly languages such as Python and JavaScript. Participants learn how to write simple programs, understand basic algorithms, and create small applications. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving skills and logical thinking.

- Build a simple program or website to showcase newfound skills.
Basic Electronics and Circuit Design
Participants explore the basics of electronics, including how to read circuit diagrams, use a breadboard, and build simple electronic projects. This course provides hands-on experience with tools and materials, fostering a deeper understanding of the technology that powers everyday devices.

- Create and troubleshoot basic electronic circuits.
- Gain familiarity with components such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors.

3D Design and Prototyping
In this course, participants learn the fundamentals of 3D design using software like Tinkercad or Fusion 360. They explore how to create digital models, prepare files for 3D printing, and bring their designs to life using 3D printers. This course helps participants develop skills applicable to careers in engineering, manufacturing, and product design.

Data Analysis and Visualization
This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of data analysis and visualization using tools like Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and basic Python libraries. Participants learn how to organize, analyze, and interpret data, as well as how to present findings effectively.

- Develop a small project using data relevant to a chosen topic, such as budgeting or community demographics.
STEM in the Workplace: Real-World Applications
Participants explore how STEM concepts are applied in various industries, including healthcare, environmental science, engineering, and technology. This course includes guest speakers, field trips, and case studies to illustrate how technical skills are used to solve complex problems and innovate.

Career Preparation Workshops
Resume Building and Portfolio Development
Participants receive guidance on creating professional resumes tailored to STEM fields. They also build an online portfolio showcasing their projects, skills, and achievements from both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the program.

Interview Skills and Networking
This workshop focuses on preparing participants for job interviews in STEM fields. Participants practice common technical and behavioral interview questions, learn how to effectively communicate their strengths, and build networking strategies to connect with industry professionals.

- Demonstrate confidence in answering technical and soft-skill interview questions.
- Understand how to build a professional network using platforms like LinkedIn.
STEM Workplace Culture and Professionalism
This workshop introduces participants to the unique culture of STEM workplaces, covering topics such as collaboration, problem-solving, and professionalism. It addresses challenges faced by women and minorities in STEM and provides strategies for navigating these environments successfully.

- Develop an understanding of STEM workplace dynamics.
- Gain confidence in navigating workplace challenges and advocating for oneself.
Phase 2 of the Women with STEAM program is an intensive, hands-on experience that equips participants with both the technical and professional skills needed to succeed in STEM careers.
By the end of this phase, participants will have completed several personal projects, developed a professional portfolio, and gained a clear understanding of potential career paths in STEM.
With these skills, they will be well-prepared to enter Phase 3, where they will pursue advanced technical training and real-world internships.
Phase 2: Skill Development and Career Preparation (12wks)
Goal: Equip participants with hands-on technical skills, career preparation tools, and resources to begin exploring specific STEM fields.
Courses
Introduction to Coding and Programming
This course covers the fundamentals of coding and programming using languages such as Python, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript. Participants will learn to write basic code for web development and data analysis, gaining the skills to build simple websites and run basic programs. The course will include hands-on projects where participants create interactive web pages and scripts.
Applied Science and Lab Techniques
Basic laboratory skills (microscopy, pipetting, measurement techniques). This course will provide hands-on lab experience for those interested in biosciences or chemistry resulting in participant competency in essential lab techniques with an introduction to safety protocols.
Introduction to Digital Prototyping & 3D Printing
Using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software and operating 3D printers, this course will teach digital design principles and 3D printing techniques resulting in participants’ ability to design and prototype simple objects.
STEM Career Exploration & Planning
Identify potential STEM career pathways and understand industry demands with this course that explores career options and aids in developing a roadmap for entering a chosen field. Participants will generate a personalized career plan with identified steps for further training and job searches.
Resume Building and Interview Preparation
Learn how to create a professional resume tailored to STEM careers with this course that assists participants with developing a strong resume and practicing mock interviews. Participants will complete a professional, polished resume and interview skills.
Work-Life Balance for Single Mothers in STEM
Time management, setting career goals, and navigating career and family balance skills will be taught to participants in order to help them create sustainable routines and strategies for managing both family and work. Participants will generate an action plan for maintaining work-life balance.
Intro to Robotics and Automation
Basics of robotics, automation, and simple programming using robotics kits to learn to design, build, and program simple robots. Participants will gain understanding of robotics systems and their application in various industries.
Entrepreneurship in STEM
Exploring entrepreneurial opportunities in STEM, from freelancing to startups. This course will help participants understand business basics, startup funding, and networking. Participants will complete an initial business plan draft or freelance strategy for STEM fields.
